The day before the scan

For most MRI exams you do not need to fast, except for some abdominal studies with contrast. Always confirm with your clinic.

What to wear

  • Comfortable clothing without metal zips, buttons or wires.
  • No jewellery, watches, hair clips or piercings.
  • Make-up may contain metal particles — you may be asked to remove it.

Medication and implants

Always report: pacemakers, insulin pumps, cochlear implants, surgical clips, prior eye surgery with metal fragments or iron-based tattoos. Regular medication can usually be taken as normal.

Contrast (gadolinium)

Some scans use contrast via a drip. Patients with kidney problems must mention this in advance.
