Why MRI can feel frightening

The narrow bore, loud knocking and need to lie still make MRI one of the more anxiety-provoking exams. Studies suggest 5–15% of scans are stopped early due to panic.

Solutions clinics offer

  • Open MRI or wide-bore scanners (70 cm or wider).
  • Light sedation via IV or oral medication.
  • Music or audiobooks through MRI-safe headphones.
  • A companion allowed beside the scanner at many private clinics.

Self-help

Breathing exercises, visualisation and avoiding caffeine beforehand help many patients.
