MRI vs CT: when is each modality used?

CT is fast and uses X-rays; MRI takes longer but often shows soft tissue better. The choice depends on the clinical question.

CT

Ideal for trauma, pulmonary embolism, acute abdomen and when speed matters. Uses ionising radiation.

MRI

No ionising radiation; often better soft-tissue contrast. Downsides: longer scan, noise, restrictions with some metal implants.

Practical advice

Follow your referrer's protocol; the radiologist can advise if unsure which scan fits best.
