How long does a full total body scan take?

On a 3.0T scanner 45–60 minutes, on 1.5T up to 90 minutes. A consultation with the radiologist often follows (20–30 minutes).

Will my insurer cover a preventive MRI?

No — basic Dutch health insurance does not cover preventive screening. Some supplemental policies offer up to about €250 per year; check your policy.

Can I have an MRI if I am claustrophobic?

Yes. Choose a clinic with open MRI or wide-bore (70 cm), or ask about light sedation. Many clinics allow a companion beside the scanner.

Do I need a GP referral?

For hospital care and insurance reimbursement yes. Many private clinics accept direct booking without referral (self-pay).

Does MRI use radiation like X-ray?

No. MRI uses no ionising radiation. There is exposure to magnetic fields and radiofrequency energy within strict safety limits (SAR).

Why is an MRI so loud?

Gradient coils switch rapidly and vibrate the scanner housing — it sounds like knocking or hammering. You will get earplugs or an MRI-safe headset.
